David Frum’s opinions shouldn’t be taken lightly. He is probably echoing many citizens who believe immigration policy and government practices need revision. “Replacement theory” is a scam perpetuating extreme Republican views. That it has resonance sends a scary message.
Educated observers understand that white supremacy (and racism, generally) is a superstitious, anti-scientific canard. As Norm points out, its proponents were once fragmented but are now a critical mass. Any such criticality has but two possible outcomes: either being managed at a low level of destructiveness or being allowed to explode. Our immediate challenge is to manage the destructive effects of racial animus while extirpating its causes. If we fail to act, our society will explode.
I don't think David Frum is naive and he wasn't defensive in our convo. He is one of our most formidable public intellectuals. But I agree that I hope he takes the danger posed by replacement theory a little more seriously.
