I agree.

I think the abortion decision is an enormous shot in the arm to the Democratic Party. I think, unfortunately, most people are oblivious to most political news most of the time, but there are a few exceptions and one of them is sex. Whereas most people are oblivious to the Supreme Court's rightward shift on shareholder derivative actions, criminal law and voting rights, their ears are sentinels for scandal, sex and anything scintillating. Abortion of course is a whole lot more than sexy gossip. It is an issue that can harden female opinion into a political battering ram. I knew secretaries who asked, the day after the 2010 election, if there had been "some kind of election" the day before that had made people upset. Those dizzy secretaries will probably be voting this November

Although I am a Democrat (with growing misgivings over the years as its leaders have been turning it into a nostalgia club where people can recall their liberal youth while pursuing neo liberal policies), and although, all things considered, I am glad that the Dems will probably pick up seats in November, I have a certain attraction for pols who don't do the politically popular thing.

Yes, abortion was popular, but in 1964 the Vietnam War was popular. G-d bless men like Wayne Morse who dared to oppose the War at that early date. In 2003, most Dems voted for the War in Iraq. In the late 30's isolationism was popular. Thank G-d that FDR was opposed to isolationism and the sometimes quasi or semi fascistic tendencies of large groups of Americans and mobilized opinion in favor of England and the Soviet Union.

There are smart pols, who are like weathervanes and heed the public's peeves and prejudices. Once upon a time there were statesmen, who were, as David Reisman may have said, "inner directed," who believed in something and had the power to bring people around to their point of view.

Karl Rove's glib reference to a "category five hurricane" is particularly tone deaf. Heck of a job, Karl.
