When we know that Thomas Jefferson's beloved Monticello fell into disrepair until a Jewish family bought it and restored it out of their appreciation to him for writing the right to religious freedom into the Virginia constitution we are enlightened. What it means to be a "practicing" American free from religious prejudice is the idea that needs to be emphasized.
