A superb piece, Mr. Alter — as always. My worry about the five-member margin and discharge petitions, however, is that House Republicans, even the misnomered "moderates," tend to toe the party line out of primary fears. It will tough to get enough of them to join the Democrats.

That's a good point. My guess is that eventually the business community in purple districts--plus Wall Street donors--will get them the five votes they need. But I admit that could be wishful thinking.

You are correct but sometimes I feel as if years from now people will be saying we were as blind as the European Jews in the 1930's.

This fine report seems to be the setting of a story we all (!) remember as the Book of Joshua - with Hakeem Jeffries in the title role. 'It's the Israelites vs. the Canaanites! Be there to see the blood, the gore, the smash-mouth combat! Two solid years of tingling tension and brutal battle - all for the low, low price of a slim Republican majority. Tune in, turn on, drop your disbelief!'

Jeffries is now a major figure in the Democratic Party. He is showing that he's a great communicator. Did you notice the contrast with McCarthy's lame speech about the guy who did an iconic but phony painting of Washington crossing the Delaware?

Yes, Hakeem was mesmerizing and memorable! Kevin laid an egg.

Sadly, quite a contrast to your hopeful tone in your last column. I think the deplorables will file a motion to vacate sooner than one month. Church Committee?!!!! How is that even legal? Canada is looking better and better although, as Samantha Bee once said, "Canada doesn't want you!"

I like the Sam Bee line but not the sentiment of leaving. We all have to stay and fight!!!!
