Obama mentor, founder of presidential debates and the last living JFK appointee, on the 60th anniversary of his famous speech about the “vast wasteland” of television
Jon, where is the traction. These people in Congress retire because they don't like what's happening but then disappear instead of trying to help change the dialog. The "vast wasteland" is Trumpville.
Jon- Your book on Jimmy Carter nailed it. You could do it again with Newt -- so many stories and so many lessons to be learned from him and from that era.
An excellent reminder of the thoughtful, whip smart statesmen like Newt Minow, who used to occupy high office. It's easy to forget guys like Minow, or for that matter, Senators Paul Douglas and Everett Dirksen, both from Illinois, where I grew up. Those were the days. Thanks for reminding us and for sharing this fascinating vignette.

It's funny that you mention Dirksen and Douglas, Joel. They come up in a conversation I had recently that I will post before too long.
