Canada,Mexico, Argentina and many more countries have very limited campaign "seasons" and some prevent any advertising too. We run a popularity game which is why Trump succeeds because he is a performer.

I very much enjoyed this exchange, learned a lot, and so did you probably, so there's no reason to discuss that; but what hit me forcefully was that Mr. Kalb is saying that one Jew's life is worth more than one Arab's life: "Don't just look at the numbers."

That's debatable, to say the least. Much could be said, but the final conclusion can only be that one person is as good as another, that is, of equal value, in a general sense. If one argues that one Jew is equal to ten Arabs, that's a difficult claim to support. Yes, there are many more Arabs than Jews, but to me, one Arabic baby is fully equal to one Jewish baby. A person is not a statistic, a digit, or a means to an end. Each one has infinite value, at least it should, to other humans anyway (Martians may discount, disdain, and destroy us all with no guilt feelings, if they see us as no more than violent, evolved apes).

Another great conversation! Interesting back and forth on Kissinger, among other gems.

I'm frighten with the political climate in this nation today How can people be so blind when it comes to Trump running again for office how is it humanly possibly for him to run again with all he has done and said. I'm deeply considering giving up my citizenship and moving out as far away from here because of this madness we're in now.

A solemn, somber and instructional piece by two "old goats" who are still telling us the truth. I too am and old goat (79) and lived through the "troubles" of the 1960's. We have three pillars defending our democracy: the voters, the press (which has to step up its game and defend democracy or the "free press" will have no meaning) and the courts. But if President Trump ignores the courts, which he will do, who will enforce a court decision against him? The risks we face this year make the challenges of the 1960's look minute. As bad as he was, Nixon honored the Constitution; Trump already tried to overthrow it. If he gets a second chance, he will do so and will be supported by the mob.

Marvin Kalb, a journalism icon! I’m 79 & lived through many of the times he discussed. If he is fearful of our democracy’s stability, so am I!

Trump is just a reflection of the American people. Tony Schwartz and I were friends and co-board members of our NYC cooperative when he wrote the Art of the Deal. Trump is smart and the mistake of the liberal is to underestimate him. He became President once and almost twice and maybe now a third time. He is totally unqualified for this position. Our government is a huge bureaucracy which he can't manage. Trump understands that if we still have the Electoral College and no talk of compulsory voting and unlimited money in politics and endless campaigning-- it should be five weeks max-- and five other easy to fix issues that everyone is afraid of change and would rather risk losing the democracy then taking a chance.
