Jonathan, You deserve a public service medal for this one. By putting all the evidence in one place, you’ve made it plain that his fascism is thoroughgoing. Thank you.
That is an excellent observation, that Trump continuously “ups the ante” on his rhetoric in order to keep his followers engaged and the rest of us, including the media, shocked, appalled and frightened.
Trump not only has a "weird thing for Hitler." His political history, to some extent, mirrors Hitler's history:
1) In the beginning of his political career, people did not take Hitler seriously. They laughed at him. They found his ideas repugnant, but they considered him politically impotent.
Quite similiarly, when his 2016 campaign was in its infancy, people found Trump to be a source of amusement. Political commentators laughed at him. They recognized the odiousness of his ideas, but they laughed as they were sure he'd never get any place with them.
2) Conservatives, junkers, and industrialists in Germany sided with Hitler, because he was fiercely anti-communist, but they thought they could rein him in, thwart his more extreme tendencies and prevent him from embarking on his deadlier and sicker escapades. Similiarly, in this country conservative Republicans thought they could control Trump, but he is controlling them. It reminds me of what JFK said in his inaugural addess: "Those who try to ride on the back of the tiger often end up inside the Tiger's belly."
Also, please take a look at my most recent article on Trump in which I assert that his presidency is illegitimate and must be contested and defied at every turn
I am finding it increasingly difficult to retain any respect for my countrymen.
Trump's demerits are so palpable, enourmous and bone-chilling.
Everyone who is not psychotic and has an IQ above room temperature should realize that a candidate who a) discusses, in frightening detail, his homocidal hopes visa vis Liz Cheyney, b) who claims he wants generals akin to Hitler's generals, c) stops military training exerices with South Korea and Japan because the Fuhrer of North Korea complimented him, e) talks about shooting people, at random, on 5th Avenue, f) claims that demonstrators should be beaten up and sent to the hospital, g) Claims that social distancing and covid precautions should end on Easter Sunday, 2020 because his psychotic soul told me that the epidemic would be over by then, h) tells us that we should drink or inject bleach to combat covid and does and says a zillion other things that connote the intellect of an eight year old, the self-discipline of three year old and the egocentricity of a new born, along with the bitterness and hate of a 98 year old, is A CANDIDATE FOR A PRISON CELL OR PSYCH WARD, not the Presidency.
The perplexing and sickening question is this: What made Americans stupid enough or sick enough to vote for such filth and trash masquerading as a human being.
I think part of the problem is the allegedly liberal media. For a long time, the media nurtured him because he was great for ratings. The media is guilty of many more heinous errors recounted in this article:
Just watched you and Jill Winebanks on Politicon. Enjoyed your discussions immensely. I’m Canadian, but very tuned into American Politics, as is the world on the eve of the 2024 Election.
Nauseously Optimistic is how I might describe how I feel now, after the 9 years of authoritarian grooming and spewed poisoning of democracy the former President - convicted felon and Republican Presidential Candidate has foisted on the American people. I pray Harris and Walz win….the House and Senate turn blue…and DJT will be held accountable. Without the Civil War that Putin wants the U. S to have.
"Trump dehumanizes immigrants by calling them “vermin” who are “poisoning the blood of our country”—Hitler’s exact words for the Jews."
No. Trump is talking about ILLEGAL immigrants. By leaving that one word out, you're are sending out misinformation. (I'm not defending Trump, nor am I voting for him.
Hi, Dennis. Trump has often blurred the distinction between legal and illegal, rarely if ever praising the former. And even those here illegally should never be dehumanized in Hitlerian terms.
I don't defend Trump's ugly characterizations of all those he targets, including immigrants--legal or not. But the issue clearly is between legal and illegal immigrations. I haven't heard Trump blur the distinction, but you might have listened to him more than I have. I can't even begin to list the number of times the media (like the New York Times which I read regularly) have blurred that distinction.

Thanks, Patricia!
Thank you for sharing this relevant history and editorial!

Thank you for this wonderful article, Jonathan. Hoping thousands will see it. And "get" it.
Thanks, Nancy!

Jonathan, thanks for all you’ve done and are doing to keep this modern day “Hitler” from succeeding! He’s an evil force!
Thanks, Anthony!
We owe you a lots & for your perspectives!

Says it all.
That’s just disgusting to look at….
but why do you say "history doesn't repeat itself"?
I just got American Reckoning in the mail. God, I miss book stores.

I am utterly aghast at how many stupid people there are who are pro-Trump, or undecided.
"Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it".
Yep. Thanks, Paula.
Thank you for speaking up on 2Way....that business model depends on normalizing DT
