John Harwood has long been one of the best political journalists in America. I'm a cancer survivor, too, and I'm re-posting his piece because cancer patients might not survive this horrendous budget.
Jon, thanks so much for posting this. I too have had to go down the cancer path--with a one-in-a-million case that fell into the category of "aggressive." I was beyond lucky to be treated in a hospital that is a global leader in medical research, which means that I am also the beneficiary of the federal funding that went into the research that provided a highly effective treatment. I will never understand the rage and/or ignorance driving the assault on medical research. The whole field is something that all Americans, whatever their politics, should be really proud of.
This is profound! Thanks so much, but how do we get this information to those who need it but won't read it? When I wrote BORROWING LIFE, about the first successful kidney transplant, I knew those surgeons. They got most of the funding from the Atomic Energy Commission after WWWII because everyone want to know how to great radiation sickness in the nuclear age. And of course the cancer drugs to enhance the immune system led to controlling rejection in transplant patients. -- If you have suggestions for my submitting my article about the scientific development of the Salk/Sabin vaccine to The Guardian, The Atlantic, or to some periodical that will post it on phones to reach the lay public, I'd appreciate it. I want to push back against the dismissal of the Vaccine Advisory Committee. (By the way, THE WHITE HOUSE WILD CHILD is in development for a series by a young fireball screenwriter, Sara Becker, in LA. I lost my agent over my insistence of giving her a nominal fee for an option because I didn't want her to have debt. Oh, well... I sent her a recording of TR's voice, hoping if they succeed in bringing this story to the public, they can choose an actor who will educate the public in what a good president is. ) By the way, you might want to read my Substacks post, "Is a brain tumor good for anything?"
Thank you for sharing John Harwood’s post. I was diagnosed with CLL (leukemia) about a year and a half ago. After the initial terror of the diagnosis, I set myself to study and learn what I can about my prognosis and treatment options. I am so heartened by the medical breakthroughs of late, and the willingness of researchers to include us in trials. But now, the terror is creeping back. I’m on a Medicare Advantage health plan and do not have other significant resources. While the billionaires get their windfall from this evil man’s administration, those of us in real financial straits from the healthcare expense burden will actually die.
That is not the country I grew up to be proud of. The people I know that will fare worse than me don’t deserve this punishment. Please keep speaking truth and telling the stories that will resonate with people beyond the artificial red or blue.
Jon, as you know I am fighting NHL for the third time, this time in my central nervous system. With this appalling legislation that puts more value on tax cuts than on saving lives, I guess my hopes of a drug being developed to prevent recurrences is a pipe dream.

I have run out of words for the cruelty and mendacity of Trump and his enablers, so I won't bother repeating them here. This post should be shared everywhere because it takes something which some might view in abstract terms and makes it real.
Trump is a mass murderer. He delights in making people suffer and die. How anyone can support this monster is beyond my comprehension. Why Congress didn't get rid of him when they had the chance shows their true colors. The psychopaths are ruling us right now.

My husband has a rare B-Cell lymphoma and is in remission today thanks to federally-funded research protocols and the excellent care he received at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Disease doesn't care about your politics. These cuts will hurt Americans across the board and millions will die. It is a shanda.

The numbers quoted in this bill take on a whole new level of meaning once a human face it attached to the policy which is so easily discarded to further enrich the wildly wealthy. God forgive us for losing our moral courage to care for each other.
Cancer is a billion dollar industry. Chemotherapy does kill cancer cells, however, it will kill all other cells as well, not just targeting the cancer. Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski is a biologist. He has a practice in Texas. He has CURED many people from brain tumors. This is his specialty. However, The American Medical association has tried to close his practice down and throw him in jail!! Why? Because he is a threat to the many oncologists who make a great living pretending to help people. I have done much research into this!! My dad is a perfect example of someone who went through a specific treatment and passed away at this doctor’s negligence. Also, a co-worker had lost her daughter following “normal” procedures. The fight to combat cancer started in the 1970’s. So why is it taking so long? Why don’t people hear about Dr. Burzynski? It’s very obvious to me!! They don’t want to find a cure. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry. It’s amazing that the gentleman telling this story found a successful treatment. I have heard about the success of bone marrow transplants. In fact, I know someone who successfully had this done. Don’t get me wrong. Kudos to any new procedures that work, but people are still suffering!! Please look up Stan Burzynski’s story on YouTube. There are ways to prevent this disease. You just have to look for them!!
As unbelievable as it seems these cuts are intertwined with religious beliefs that have been reimagined to justify such deprivation and cruelty. And by people with surprising influence and conviction, and applying to arbitrary bad fortune of any kind as much as it does to poverty ...
I’m a metastatic breast cancer patient, and for the last 25 years I’ve been getting an infusion every three weeks of a drug that wasn’t publicly approved when my cancer was first detected. Twenty five years ago I had cancer in my liver and brain and did not expect to see my children finish elementary school. I never, ever forget how cancer research saves lives. And I am enraged by the devastation this administration is causing.

Whatever the final bill is, it will be the anthesis of what America is and it is simply mean.
